Festive seasons play an important role for Indian e-commerce companies, as they bring a sharp rise in consumer spending. During these times, customers are especially interested in exploring discounts, special deals, and convenient shopping options.
For ONDC, these busy periods are not only about increasing transaction volumes but also about reaching new customer bases, building stronger loyalty with the existing ones by enhancing their experience, and solidifying its presence in the market.
In early November, ONDC reported strong transaction growth for the festive season, driven by a surge in activity just before the Navratri and Diwali celebrations and gifting period.
A total of 14 million transactions were reported in October, reflecting a strong 7.6% increase from September’s 12.9 million transactions. In the last three months, ONDC has recorded a total of more than 36 million transactions, out of which the top 3 states: Karnataka, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh accounted for about a third of the total transactions. Surprisingly, Maharashtra seems to be lagging behind, considering its higher population density and technological adoption rate.

In the Mobility Segment, transactions reached 5.5+ million, showing a 10% growth from the previous month, September. The Non-Mobility Segment recorded 8.4+ million transactions, which is a 7.6% increase.
Within non-mobility, the food and beverage sector was the leader, having 2 million transactions, with daily groceries following at 1 million. The fashion segment also showed considerable growth, with transactions climbing to 1.1 million in October from 0.9 million in September.
ONDC’s rapid growth over the past year is promising for both buyers and sellers in India. Transactions in October 2024 rose by more than 200% compared to October 2023, when the platform recorded 4.5 million transactions.
In October 2024 alone, ONDC recorded orders from over 450 districts nationwide, with Karnataka leading in overall order volume. Maharashtra saw a much smaller increase in activity, by more than 170 thousand orders—just a 1% rise from the August-September period—spread across 31 districts, where Pune recorded the highest number of orders. This slow but steady growth suggests a promising, though gradual, adoption in Maharashtra.

ONDC’s recent success also may result from its increase in incentive payouts by 50% for October, encouraging wider participation, particularly from small businesses. Despite an earlier deceleration in August, with a 5% growth in transactions, ONDC has periodically adjusted its financial incentives to align with market demand.
In early October, ONDC had increased monthly incentive payouts for network players, raising the maximum limit to Rs 60 lakh—a nearly 50% increase from the previous month. Earlier in 2023, ONDC had also adjusted its incentives: in September, it set a Rs 50 incentive per order over Rs 200 for food and Rs 100 for grocery, beauty, and personal care. While in May ‘23, it had capped all discounts at Rs 100 per order under a new scheme.

With his experience in leading key digital projects which handle nation-wide adoption numbers like Aadhaar and CoWIN, he is well-positioned to help ONDC grow and improve digital commerce in India.
As the year progresses towards its end, it will be interesting to observe how ONDC’s initiatives continue to shape consumer behaviour and support small businesses across India.
